Applauding the initiative taken for the first time to felicitate nine eminent celebrities from various fields of acting, sports, music, dance and writing, governor MK Narayanan congratulated chief minister Mamata Banerjee over her unique initiative. The nine celebrities who received the first Banga-Bibhushan award on July 25, 2011 at the Science City auditorium included names like - Sailen Manna, Amala Shankar, Sandha Mukhopadhyay, Dwijen Bandopadhyay, Manna Dey, Amjad Ali Khan, Haradhan Bandopadhyay, Mahasweta Devi and Supriya Devi.
